Musical goodness
My ears are still happily ringing from the last few days. On Friday evening, Becca and I caught a show at the London Music Club which is a beautiful venue located in an old house near downtown. We saw Neil Conway, a rather entertaining Newfoundlander who sang songs about George Bush and cannibalism and looked all of about 20 years old. The main event for us was Harmony Trowbridge, a lovely singer/songwriter who was accompanied by her charming husband Adam. She has an absolutely gorgeous voice, great stage banter, and put on an all- round enjoyable show. She also did a splendid cover of Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye by Leonard Cohen, who, if anyone doesn't already know happens to be one of my not-so-guilty pleasures in life. Like Leonard, Harmony is a beautiful poet. Her song No Photographs (listen to it on her MySpace page) cuts to the bone, and I was pretty much a mess (a glorious mess, though) upon hearing it. Gorgeous, gorgeous. If you have a chance to check it out, I highly recommend the LMC. And all of this musical deliciousness for $5!!
Last night was another concert, with Kim P. and Tyler, this time Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans. I was very excited to learn that The Elliott Brood was opening, as I received their album for Christmas last year and it has been a favourite since. They were fantastic, and a lot more rocking live than on record. They are returning to London at the end of October so I am definitely going to see them again. Plus, they are incredibly nice guys and I ended up purchasing a limited edition tin-type EP from them and chatting with them about the set. They were also selling a ridiculously cute tshirt that is red and has a tractor on it - it might soon become a part of my wardrobe.
Corb Lund was awesome! He and the band were all decked out in what I think could be considered whimsical chuckwagon prairie settler garb - white shirts, red neck scarfs, and cowboy boots. They played for over 2 hours with an encore, and the crowd was going crazy for them. It was awesome to see so many people enjoying country music that actually has some grit and cleverness to it, rather than just shiny and slick stuff.
The rest of the weekend was filled with homework, supper with Lora and Hayden at Swiss Chalet, a visit from Meg, and Embro Fair on Sunday afternoon. Now back to the serious business of schoolwork. Hope everyone is well!

"looked all of about 20 years old" that's nice to hear as an 28 year old dreading the big 3-0. Thanks for checkin' it out.

We really enjoyed the show...and I definitely meant the age things as a compliment. Look forward to seeing you again in London!
