The art of "mixing"

So far this semester, Thursday has become my favourite day of each week. Mostly because it is a day free of classes when I can sleep in and forget about the first three days of the week which never fail to put me in a surly mood. Thursday also includes the much anticipated Grey's Anatomy study break, and last night's episode didn't fail to dissapoint.

Aside from all of these wonderful things about Thursdays, this week Becca and I decided that we really needed to make a concerted attempt to be social by attending the official graduate student mixer. We had very good intentions, congratulating ourselves beforehand for really making an effort to meet new people, etc. etc. But, there was good stuff on TV, we drank the delic. butterscotch/vanilla concoctions in the photo above, found a lot of things to talk about, and by the time we caught a bus, didn't make our grand entrance til around 11:45pm.

Apparently by this point Western's grad students had officially been "mixed", because the tables were being cleaned and moved back to their regular places. We did meet one Borat-type character who enthusiastically welcomed us by telling us what "nice girls" we were and encouraging us to dance...on the empty dance floor. We declined, but his heart (or attitude about mixing) seemed to be in the right place. We heard there had been free beer earlier in the evening, so perhaps we should have planned our arrival a bit better. At the very least the free beer would have helped me to find the history students in the crowd.

After walking around outside, standing beside some engineers for a bit, and looking for people to socialize with, we just ended up grabbing a table. Our noble attempt at mixing failed, but we did talk to the bartender...though as Becca noted, bartenders really do have to be friendly to everyone. Maybe we'll have better luck at the grad speed dating event that I keep hearing rumblings of!
